Y2K – ♥ THE MILLENIUM

leave a comment »

How long ago was it that ty1pin lyk3 diz waz an IRC norm?

Where have the Y2K times gone?
We loved the Y2K. We miss the times where everyone thought the earth was going to explode the minute 1999 became 2000, the Y2K AKA the Millenium.

What was your favourite Y2K song? Was it Will Smith’s rapping in his song, Y2K? Did you know all the lyrics to it? Was it Aqua? Do you still secretly play Cartoon Heroes in your car?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________
Abbreviations were a huge part of the Y2K. It made the Y2K unqiue.

Can you imagine typing Laugh Out Loud or Laughing My Ass Off every-time you wanted to LOL or LMAO (pronounced as LE-MAO IRL (In Real Life)) on the wonderful WWW? OIC translated into a cool Oh, I see.

Abbreviations opened up many opportunities for us and gave us a chance to translate emotions into reality immediately. Utilizing only the most minimal of finger activity, you won’t believe how much time abbreviating saves you.

If you’re sick of the LMAOs and the FYIs, here are other cool ways to abbreviate to be on top of the game :

Thank You, Cutie-Pie = 10QQTP
Care For a Drink? = C4AD?
Hey I Really Like Your Tank Top = HIRLYT²
Do You Like Your Beer Bottled Or On Tap? = DYLYB²O²T
I Will Be Heading Home First Just For Your Information = IWBH²FJFYI

Don’t be too ambitious. Start with shorter sentences and as you progress, you will be surprised at your amazing ability to guess ANY abbreviation thrown at you. Practice makes perfect!

When will our memories from Y2K become hip again?

About Us:

JIAK is to eat, eating, eaten.
JIAK is not an individual, neither is it a community.
JIAK is getting cake smashed in your face, and growing pimply after.
JIAK is not about putting on weight.
JIAK is however, far from anorexic.
JIAK is cheese factor x10000000000.
JIAK is a necessity.
JIAK is a meal, a dessert, a treat, and a present all in one. b
JIAK is so rad, it’s totally uncool.
JIAK is so much cake, we’d recommend unbuttoning your jeans.
JIAK is not very pretty, instead we’re avid inner beauty believers.
JIAK is best eaten with tea, or beer, or with loved ones by your side.
JIAK is wearing your nerdiest grade school outfit, and rocking it.
JIAK is practically the air we breathe in, except with vanilla-scented fumes.

But mostly,
JIAK is about having your cake, and eating it.

Oh before we forget,
JIAK is also an ongoing project under WE-BAO-KA-LIAO.

Starbucks at Siglap

with 2 comments

We think we speak for everyone who stays or flocks to Siglap on a daily basis when we say that Siglap is just not the same without Starbucks.

For those of you who have been living in a cocoon, the Starbucks branch at Siglap/Jalan Jamal has been closed for renovation. For how long exactly, we haven’t got a clue. But it’d better be good.

Meanwhile, the other Starbucks at Big Splash along ECP does make a good substitute. If you’ve got a car.

HOH

How long ago was it that every kid on the block was spotting these shirts from House of Holland? The staple clothing during the earlier days of RSG parties, you would have thought HOH was giving them away for free as door gifts.

Well we at WBKL have sure been guilty of owning at least one of those. But lately it’s been stinging our eyes, which leads us to the next question.

Fashion Faux Pas Forever More or will it do a Comeback Kid? I mean, look at where wide legged pants are at right now..

For the Love of Singapore

leave a comment »

You might think we should have better things to update about. Our Little Miss Best Dressed entry can wait till tomorrow…
Because not everyone is that patriotic.
NDP 2008
Photocredits : Lifestyle.sg

Somehow, through the years of singing pretty corny National days songs in school, sticking faux Singapore Flag tattoos on our faces, and turning the big 2-0, the magic of National Day is still not lost.

Just like Christmas, where you grow up and realise Christmas is not all about receiving presents or waiting for sleigh bells ringing, National Day is not about wearing red and white clothes, or knowing the lyrics to the sometimes corny theme song for the year (Corny or not, sometimes we catch ourselves singing it…..)

National Day is really just a day to be proud of being Singaporean. Most importantly, to be grateful and appreciative of living the life we are able to live in Singapore.

We enjoyed our ride to town that day as we were unable to get tickets for the parade. We made do with TV Mobile in the comfort of Bus No.14, sharing the same pride as every other commuter who had their eyes glued to the screen.

The Other Winner

Reinald
We know we’ve only just mentioned Mr Reinald Chee in our earlier post but maybe we didn’t do him enough justice.

We know for most part of his Final Year Project, he had a hard time explaining to both lecturers and course-mates about his project. Hell, we’ve watched him set up his exhibition booth for months and until this day we still find it hard to explain what his project is all about, coherently.

But because Reinald is Oh So Kyute it shouldn’t hurt anyone if we gave him extra plugs…

Tho Reinald’s specialism is in Interactive Media Design, he also dabbles in graphic design and we noticed he really likes drawing pretty girls and weird characters. Just an observation.

Some of his more recent works -
Land of No Beginnings

And a character he came up with for the MTV Virus project
Funker

Rei says he’s bad with words.. and is a little shy to describe himself (Yeaaa rightttt) so we shall just leave it as that. Meanwhile, you know where to find him. You can drop us a mail if you want his phone number. No, serious!

Our Very Own Yellow Pencils

with one comment

Winners!
When our friends, Reinald and Jason, sent in their collaborated Final Year Projects during our time at Temasek Design School for the very prestigious D&AD awards, we didn’t think much of it.

Dude, it’s the D&AD! Anyone in the know knows how important and renowned the D&AD ceremonies are. Knowing the thousands of entries that were going to be up against them, their chances seemed not just slim, anorexic almost.

A few months later, much to our surprise, our boys got the news that their entries had been shortlisted and after much hesitation, went on to London for the ceremony. Lo and Behold, a call and several Facebook wall posts later, we found out that not only did they emerge winners in the MTV Virus category, they had beat another 23,000 entries from 60 countries to win the Student of The Year award.

What makes it even more amazing is the fact that through the 30 years history that D&AD has seen, Jason and Reinald were the first winners that actually hail from outside of the UK.

Naturally, they appeared in newspapers, and here’s one of them featured on the Today newspaper.

The Yellow Pencils

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

So what exactly did they do?
They had based their collaboration around an MTV Virus brief and executed it in 3 parts -
A 4 minute film shot and produced by Jason and an installation and interactive application set up by Reinald on the day of our Final Year Project. Well, to be honest, their entire collaboration is a little complicated to explain, so I suggest again, that you read the article posted above.

If you’ve the time to spare, you might need a little time to ingest a video that explains the overview of their entire project here.

If you are already confused, we suggest you just view the following video directed, shot and produced by Jason.
Virus
Click on the picture to go to youtube video!

We hear MTV’s in talks with them boys… about what exactly, we’re not entirely sure. But if everything works out fine, you know you heard it from us first!

Anyways, you can view more of their works at their respective portfolios :
Jason Feng Moving Images’08,
Reinald Chee Interactive Media Design’08.

Man, we wished we paid more attention in school.

Tights.. are not Pants

leave a comment »

I’m sure for all of us who read fashion magazines, or live in the 21st century for that matter, have some point or other came across articles slamming girls wearing tights as pants. Or maybe some/or majority of you have slammed innocent girls on the street daunting what most people call fashion disasters.

A simple search on google would probably give you results as such.

Deemed a serious, inexcusable issue to some (or, many), it even prompted a website-
Tights Not Pants

Yea.. tights are not pants. That’s cause.. they’re tights.

With earthquakes and terrorist attacks going on, you would think people would find something more serious to hate about. Why do people feel the need to take fashion so seriously? It is only human nature to pass judgement, but there really is no need for such loath. Especially if it’s just a piece of spandex.

People should be able to wear anything they want to. Even if it’s Crocs.

Things We Like to Wear With Tights :
Tanktops
T-shirts
Dr Martens
High-cut sneakers
Socks

Oh we could go on.
